Training Equipment

While some links below are affiliate links, these are the various training tools that I use in training my own dogs. They are necessary for adequately steering your dog through most training situations.

For anybody with a dog in training, minimal equipment should include three items: A 1) flat collar, 2) five or six foot clip leash, and 3) one of either a slip collar, Martingale collar, or slip leash. Also a pouch to hold reward treats while training.

The Slip Leash

A slip leash slides up and down to increase or decrease pressure. It slides by means of the rope being through a ring, with a stopper to fit it correctly to your dog’s neck.

The most commonly used training leash. With this being a leash and collar combination, it provides convenience, strength, and action all in one leash. Most common length is 6 ft, but may be purchased in much longer sizes for recall and other training.

Sometimes found locally. If not they can be ordered from Amazon or Chewy.

Slip Collar: Used exactly like the slip leash above.

These come in a variety of lengths and widths to fit your dog’s neck. A standard or long training leash can be attached to it.

These usually have to be ordered, and can be purchased through Amazon or Chewy.

Martingale Collar

This is an action collar that is adjustable for a range of dog neck sizes. A good all-around training and walking collar.

The collar can be sized for your dog’s neck. Then with leash attached, can remain loose, or tightened when necessary by pressure on the leash. Also good as a safety collar. If I had a choice of only one collar for everything, this would be it.

Usually have to be ordered. Available at Amazon and Chewy.

Flat Collar

Available everywhere pet supplies are sold. These are best as secondary collars to be worn below the slip leash or slip collar.

That said, one can be used as a training collar if it’s all that is available.

When selecting, look for all metal hardware. Avoid insert type buckles or plastic hardware. Should be fitted for secure placement on your dog’s neck.

Clip Leashes

Familiar to everybody and widely available.

In lengths from 5-6 ft for walking and training. 10-30 ft lengths for more advanced training such as Stay and Recall. Also for long leash walking (my favorite)

Most locally available leashes will be flat nylon. Leashes of other materials can be ordered from Amazon.

Treat Pouch Or Apron

Pouches specifically for dog training can be ordered from Amazon. Or you can use any type pouch that can hold dog treats at your belt level while training. Also simple hardware store aprons with front pockets will work.

E-Collars from Dogtra and The Education Collar Company

Many other good ones but these are two of the best known companies.

E-collars with 100 – 120 training levels for precision training. One of the top devices to ensure the communication with, and safety of your dog when off leash at distance. Order from Amazon or Chewy, or directly from the companies.

Basket Muzzles

If your dog shows signs of aggression to humans or other animals, in close proximity, a basket muzzle is an effective and humane solution.

Protects your dog from their own instinct. Protects animals and people from a bite.

All while allowing your dog to drink water, take food from your hand, and breathe normally.

Generally necessary to order. Available at Amazon and Chewy.
